The 21st century is defined by movement, transformation, and the emergence of new communities. After decades of global migration, familiar boundaries between genres and cultures now cut across geographical, ethnic, and temporal orders. Yet contemporary music in Europe continues to develop, remarkably closely, along the sound worlds of the last and even the penultimate century. Yet something is changing: In many places, musicians have joined across genre boundaries to search for new orchestral forms and new sounds. They seek to draw on the immeasurably vast potential of the global diversity of sound that exists right at our doorstep – not in order to achieve diversity, but to enable a new artistic complexity that promises far greater creative depth.

From 24–26 April 2026, the Trickster Orchestra will present the first edition of TransTraditionale, its music festival of the global present. Over the course of three days, the festival brings together at Berlin’s Radialsystem some of the most virtuosic soloists, composers, and ensembles of an avant-garde emerging from and through global migration, presenting them for the first time as a central and highly innovative scene within contemporary music. The festival explores new constellations of contemporary musical languages situated between improvisation and composition, global instrumental practices, and immigrant perspectives. TransTraditionale understands itself as an impulse toward a sonic present in art music that unfolds beyond the canonization of a Western-shaped avant-garde. In doing so, it opens up pathways through which contemporary music can become resonant with an open and diverse society shaped by migration.
