Disturbing

presented by Outernational

“One of the most exciting contemporary orchestras in Europe.”

Van Magazin, 2019

With their secret knowledge and intellect, their will to mess up godly orders, and their revolutionary nature, Tricksters are shape shifters. On their mission of transforming the world for the better, they either destroy – think of Joker or the Indian goddess Kali – or smoothly change reality in the more cunning ways of animal chimeras.

The Trickster Orchestra firmly believes that this world needs more tricksters. Gathering outstanding soloists from various musical traditions, the orchestra creates a contemporary and trans-traditional sound. For “Disturbing,” the artistic directors Cymin Samawatie and Ketan Bhatti join the curator and dramaturgist Elisa Erkelenz for two research trips to Bangkok and Bangalore to meet with local musicians in a series of workshops. Together, they question a number of mythological trickster figures for their knowledge of how to enable social and cultural change today: how can new ideas come into the world? Later-on, these local musicians will join the Trickster Orchestra for mimicry workshops in Germany to develop a multimedia and genre-busting concert program, forging a sonic space inspired by the appeal of the undefined, the in-between. Maybe this is what the world of tomorrow sounds like.
